Music
At Westminster, students attend music classes weekly from kindergarten through twelfth grade. We believe music is an essential part of a classical Christian education because it trains students to recognize beauty, pursue excellence, and joyfully participate in God’s created order.
The foundation of our music program is a theology of music. Students learn that music is woven throughout Scripture and creation itself. The members of the Godhead sing, the angels sing, the apostles sing, and all creation declares the glory of God. As image bearers, we too are made to sing.
Throughout their years at Westminster, students receive a broad musical education that develops them both as performers and thoughtful listeners. Students learn to read the language of music, develop rhythmic and melodic understanding, and grow in vocal confidence and independence through singing together and in parts.
Students also listen to and study music from a variety of periods and genres within the rich tradition of Western music history, cultivating an appreciation for beauty, craftsmanship, and expression across time.
For students who desire additional musical opportunities, the Lower School offers Westminster Singers, an after-school choir for students who love to sing and perform. In the Upper School, students may pursue a variety of music electives that further develop their musical knowledge and skill. Students also have opportunities for additional instruction through the Oak Mountain School of Fine Arts at OMPC.
